Wiley Family History in Jewelville Jewelville General Store is an online general store that follows in the tradition of the John Wiley family that settled South Carolina and Georgia beginning in 1775. John Wiley immigrated to America on a ship that came from Scotland and landed in Charles Town. He served as Sheriff of the Camden District in South Carolina where he is known to have sold “Sundries” to the Militia. This was the beginning of a long association of Wiley descendents selling supplies and operating general stores. John’s son William Wiley left South Carolina and purchased land along an Indian trail known as the “Traders Path” in Franklin County, Georgia between what is now Homer and Carnesville. Altogether he accumulated over 2000 acres. He built a log house and later a store across the road from the house. William later donated land to build a church that is thriving in the community today. In 1858 Banks County was split off from Franklin County and Jewelville was finally put on the map officially. When William died in 1871 his son, William J Wiley, took over the farm and the operation of the general store. Upon his death in 1881 his son George W. Wiley built a larger plantation house across the road in from the log house and next to the general store and took over operation of the store and the farm. The old George W. Wiley home place was recently sold and restored and is a local historical site, as is the whole area considered to be the Nails Creek and Jewelville area. The original store still stands next to that house in the little community that was named Jewelville. At one time that store served as the post office, tax office and a wedding chapel in addition to being a general store. In 1926 Adonnas Wiley tore down the log house and built another house on the same site. He later remarked that he has regretted doing that ever since. His sons and his grandson now live across from the old store in Jewelville. Today the original general store building no longer houses a working store, but the Wiley's have operated country stores in and around Jewelville for almost 200 years. Two stores are still operated by descendants in Banks County, Georgia by George’s grandchildren and one great grandson operates Jewelville General Store online from Dahlonega, Georgia.
